FLORA

On its way through the harsh nature of Epirus, Acheron crosses many and different types of ecosystems in a small distance from each other.

The flora of the region numbers 509 species in total and includes some very rare ones, even in the Balkans (Cotula coronopifolia, Brassica cretica ssp. Aegaea, Dictamus albus, Lippia nodiflora, Scabiosa epirota, molitkia peratea, etc.)

FAUNA

The avifauna of the Delta includes 196 species of birds - some of them endemic but mainly migratory. They are all protected by European and National conventions. In the sandy beach of the region and also in the brackish waters of the marshes one can come across species such as the Kingfisher, the Kentish Plover and the Buzzard, whereas it worths mentioning the presence of the Dalmatian Pelican in the mouth of the river Acheron. It is a species worldwide endangered.

This presence of a large number of birds, despite the intense human intervention in the valley and the Delta of Acheron, indicates clearly the great importance of the particular water biotope as a stop along the west migrating route for the birds.

The rest of the vertebrates include 8 species of fishes, 8 species of amphibia, 16 species of reptiles and 17 species of mammals.

The fauna of the invertebrates is richer, but is less known than the fauna of the vertebrates. It worths mentioning Armadillidium janinense, which lives in Epirus, the lepidopter Hipparchia aristateus and the coleopter Agabus bipustulatus.

It also worths mentioning that the Caretta caretta occasionally uses the sandy beaches of the region to lay its eggs.
